Having an Automated External Defibrillator (AED)

How much difference can an AED really make?

For a cardiac arrest caused by a shockable rhythm such as ventricular fibrillation (VF) or pulseless ventricular tachycardia (pVT):

  • Every minute without defibrillation matters. The AHA notes that the chance of survival can fall roughly 7–10% for each minute a normal rhythm isn’t restored.
  • The AHA reports that CPR plus AED use can double or even triple survival compared with waiting for professional help alone.
  • In one registry cited by the 2025 AHA guidelines, successful first-shock defibrillation was 93% when the first shock occurred within 6 minutes, versus 75% when delayed beyond 16 minutes. Each additional minute to the first shock was associated with about a 6% reduction in survival to hospital discharge.
  • The AHA’s AED fact sheet reports that 9 out of 10 people who receive an AED shock in the first minute survive—a striking illustration of why immediate access matters.

Why an AED at the workplace can be so important

EMS may take several minutes to arrive. An AED that’s 30 seconds away can potentially be much more valuable than an AED that’s 10 minutes away.

If someone collapses at a business:

No AED nearby:
Collapse → call 911 → CPR → wait for EMS → defibrillation several minutes later.

AED immediately available:
Collapse → 911 → CPR → AED applied → shock within minutes → CPR → EMS.

That difference can be the difference between death, survival with severe brain injury, and survival with good neurological recovery.

The AHA’s current guidelines specifically state that early, high-quality CPR and prompt defibrillation are the most important interventions associated with improved outcomes in adult cardiac arrest.

A ZOLL AED Plus® adds another important advantage: Real CPR Help®. The AED provides real-time feedback on compression rate and depth, along with audio and visual prompts to help the rescuer perform effective CPR.

ZOLL AED Plus is designed to provide real-time CPR feedback and step-by-step guidance, and that its CPR-D-padz use a sensor to measure compression rate and depth.

The Biggest Difference: CPR Feedback

One of the most important points to understand is that not every cardiac-arrest patient initially needs a shock. ZOLL notes that only about half of sudden cardiac arrest victims initially require defibrillation, while all require high-quality CPR.

That’s where the ZOLL AED Plus can stand out.

Instead of simply saying:

“Push harder.”

the ZOLL AED Plus can actually monitor the rate and depth of compressions and provide feedback to the rescuer.

Why This Matters

Imagine two businesses have a cardiac arrest:

Business A:
AED available → rescuer applies AED → AED analyzes rhythm → shock if indicated → CPR continues.

Business B with ZOLL AED Plus:
AED available → rescuer applies ZOLL → AED analyzes rhythm → shock if indicated → ZOLL continuously helps the rescuer maintain CPR rate and depth.

That means the ZOLL isn’t just sitting there waiting to deliver a shock. It can actively assist the rescuer throughout the CPR process.

The Bottom Line

The difference an AED can make is potentially the difference between life and death.

And the difference between AEDs can be the difference between simply having a defibrillator available and having a device that actively supports the rescuer in delivering high-quality CPR.

For a workplace, school, gym, church, industrial facility, medical office, hotel, or other public location, the goal should be:

CPR + AED + trained responders + rapid access = the best possible chance of survival.

“Don’t just have an AED. Have an AED that helps you perform CPR correctly when every second counts.”
